Mayumi Made™: When a 7-Year Old Kid Can Do Better Than You on Solid Waste Management

Her name is Mayumi. More than just an ordinary kid, there is something more meaningful behind her name. This may mean modest, gentle and kind in Filipino but there is another good reason why I wanted to know her more than superficial.

I saw her with her mom at a bazaar here in Dasmarinas Village, Makati. They own a stall here where her mom usually sells her collection of dresses called Dizzy Dress. But there were cool little crafts displayed on a separate table that fascinated me more. It appeared like artworks made by children at school.

More than just mere curiosity, I honestly wanted to know more about these. I can't help myself until I started asking her mom, Tricia Matoto-De Santo, who has been so bubbly and very accommodating in answering all my questions.

These are made of real blocks. No major photoshop editing done other than putting some filters.
Another bright idea from Mayumi

Mayumi Made. A name specific enough to say that all these were handcrafted by Mayumi with the guidance of her mom. Focused on making use of scrap materials (like those throwaways), this amazing mother-daughter tandem owned some good principles why they started this project.

Tricia verbalized, "These 'products' were, at first, art projects in our homeschool made mostly from scraps around the house and from my Dizzy Dress™ business such as used cardboards from the grocery store, excess fabric and trims, and stuff that had been laying around Mayumi's drawer for years. While making these cool bookmarks and headdresses with her, I suddenly realized that this can also be a good time to teach her the basics of brand building and responsible entrepreneurship.

"Furthermore, I also want to share with her some planet-friendly practices—for example, why buy brand new materials when you can use old, used stuff and turn them new again? Why plug-in and use machines when you can make and craft it by hand?

"I believe, our tagline: Make the most of things, communicates the essence of Mayumi-Made™ in a nutshell. It's a good mantra for business and life."

Now let us take a look at these cool items. Who would think that these still look like scrap?

Since Mayumi has already come up with various designs, this encouraged Tricia to showcase them all at the bazaar. Along with her Dizzy Dress, Mayumi's artwork also has its own separate table. According to Tricia, they do not aim to build a big business out of this, but it's their little way of advocating people, that we can still do better things out of used carton boxes, papers and other recyclable materials. It's also a way of saying that, if a 7-year old kid can do it, then how much more for an experienced adult?

The designers behind Mayumi Made™: Mommy Tricia and her daughter, Mayumi

We need more kind-hearted, environment-friendly people like Tricia and her daughter on this planet. Their campaign may seem too simple but most of us neglect to apply it. Likewise, we sometimes talk about recycling, but we always end up buying new items.

Hope Mayumi Made™ will be an eye-opener to all of us. Let's do our fair share to our environment: Let's REUSE, REDUCE & RECYCLE.
